Our Methodology

A Scientific Approach to Mechanical System Balancing

Airflow cannot be guessed or approximated. We utilize calibrated digital manometers, hot-wire anemometers, and high-flow capture hoods to measure cubic feet per minute (CFM) at every terminal point. Our three-step workflow guarantees transparent reports and direct operational efficiency.

  1. 01

    Technical Measurement

Our engineers perform initial testing of static pressures, fan RPMs, total supply airflow, and terminal outlet velocity. We cross-reference raw field readings with design schematics to locate structural pressure drops and velocity bottlenecks in the ventilation path.

  2. 02

    Precision Adjusting

We adjust system dampers, pulley ratios, mechanical fan speed controls, and outlet registers. By regulating individual zone dampers, we distribute air volume precisely according to layout criteria, neutralizing hot or cold spots across the floorplan.

  3. 03

    TAB Report & Certification

We record final outputs, electric motor current draws, and ambient temperature readings. All data is compiled into an official TAB report certified by our technical desk, ready for building inspector verification and ASHRAE validation.

The TAB Advantage

Why Building Developers Trust Precision Air Balancers

Mechanical system performance directly affects building lifecycle costs. An unbalanced HVAC system works up to 30% harder, leading to early compressor failures, uneven building wear, and inflated utility bills. By balancing mechanical pressures, we keep air circulating optimally and protect expensive cooling plants.

We operate with absolute independence. We are a specialized testing, adjusting, and balancing firm, meaning we do not sell replacement HVAC equipment or mechanical contracts. Our measurements are completely unbiased and focus entirely on verifying that the systems perform exactly as specified by mechanical engineers.

  • Complete engineering independence with no equipment sales conflicts.
  • All testing instruments calibrated annually with NIST-traceable certificates.
  • Comprehensive reports formatted specifically for municipal code officials.
  • Expert technicians trained in ASHRAE Standards 62.1 and 111.
  • Custom balancing for complex multi-zone variable air volume (VAV) layouts.

Proven Performance in the Field

Read about the experiences of commercial general contractors, facility directors, and property developers who utilized our mechanical balancing and pressure testing.

“Perfect commercial code compliance”

Our multi-story medical facility needed immediate TAB documentation before code clearance. Precision Air Balancers balanced the entire supply and return system, resolved a major negative pressure loop in the central lobby, and provided the signed reports within our tight timeline.

— T. Henderson, Construction Project Manager · April 2026

“Utility overhead dropped 18%”

Our office building had chronic temperature variations—some zones were freezing while others were warm. The team identified closed dampers and adjusted pulley speeds on our central air handlers. The building is now perfectly uniform and electric bills dropped immediately.

— M. Vance, Operations Coordinator · January 2026

“Critical kitchen balancing resolved”

Our commercial restaurant hood was causing severe draft issues in the dining area. The engineers balanced our supply makeup air unit with the hood exhaust fan, achieving neutral air pressures and eliminating kitchen smoke leaks.

— Chef R. Martinez, Culinary Director · October 2025

Mechanical Fluid Dynamics & Fan Law Calculations

System air balancing is governed by the principles of fluid dynamics. Air behaves as an incompressible fluid in low-pressure commercial and residential HVAC systems. When we adjust a mechanical volume damper, we alter the system resistance curve, which directly shifts the operating point on the fan performance curve. Our technicians use proportional balancing to set dampers. This involves measuring all outlets, finding the key branch that acts as the limiting factor, and adjusting dampers relative to it. Once the main fan speed is set to deliver the target CFM, all terminal points receive their exact volume, eliminating the trial-and-error adjustments that can lead to duct whistling and high static pressures.

We also calculate total system static pressure profiles. High static pressure indicates restricted ductwork, undersized grilles, or dirty filters. By measuring pressure drops across components (such as heating coils, cooling coils, and air filters), we help mechanical contractors identify structural bottlenecks before final inspections. Calibrating fan pulleys and motor speeds (using variable frequency drives, or VFDs) ensures the system runs at the lowest static pressure required to satisfy ventilation codes, saving electricity and protecting equipment. This detailed mechanical verification protects expensive HVAC compressors, extends fan belt lifecycles, and maintains building comfort profiles.
